During an emergency you are forced to make quick decisions and face the consequences later. Sporadically these are wise choices and sometimes we regret them. These types of sudden decisions sometimes come into play in non-emergency situations too. When our a/c needed the blower motor updated we were faced with the option of paying the honestly high repair bill or simply buying a whole current unit. The motor was no longer under warranty so we knew that we would be responsible for the part and all the work to fix the problem. The cost of this repair was over a thousand dollars and the updatement cost, thanks to a special our business was running, was just under two thousand. My buddy and I weighed the opportunities carefully including the savings on energy bills that we would see with the current unit. After careful consideration we decided to simply install the current one. Even though the out of pocket expense was more we also realized that the current device would be under warranty for the next five years too. This meant that we would save on any maintenance and even get a discount on our service calls. In the long run, the current system would pay for itself and we would be better off too. My buddy and I even looked into tax incentives and found that we could get a small credit there as well. This only goes to prove that sometimes a bit of extra money spent will save you money down the line, however always make sure to get all the facts before making a decision of your own.
